New Delhi, 29 May 2013: Indian ace forward Shivendra Singh is back Indian team after missing out Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2013 and Hockey World League Round 2 (Delhi) which India won to qualify for Round 3. Today, Hockey India announced Indian Senior Men’s team for the FIH Men’s World League Round 3 (Semi-Finals) to be played at Rotterdam (Netherlands) from 13-23 June 2013.
Goalkeeper P R Sreejesh will also be back in action after missing out Netherlands tour as he was busy with his marriage around the same time. Birendra Lakra, who opted out of the tour because of exams, is also included in the team. Danish Mujtaba (who lead India in Azlan Shah Cup 2013) will miss out this tournament due to injury.
Hockey India Selectors Col. Balbir Singh, B P Govinda, Director High Performance Roelant Oltmans and Chief Coach Michael Nobbs alongwith Government Observer Harbinder Singh selected the list of 18 players during the meeting held on 17 May 2013.
Midfielder Sardar Singh, who has played 167 international matches for India will the 18 member squad, while defender VR Raghunath will be the vice captain.
The senior Indian men team is currently at Netaji Subhas Southern Centre (NSSC), Bangalore for the camp for the preparation of this tournament since 16 May. The team will depart for Rotterdam on 5 June, with their opening match scheduled against Ireland on 13 June 2013.
The Indian team qualified for the FIH Men World League Round 3 (Semi-Finals) in February this year by winning the World League Round 2 tournament in Delhi. The FIH World League is a qualification tournament for the FIH Men’s World Cup 2014 to be played in The Hague, The Netherland from 31 May-15 June 2014.
India is placed in Pool B with hosts The Netherlands, New Zealand and Ireland while Australia, Spain, Belgium and fourth team (to be known after the conclusion of the final tournament of FIH World League Round 2 on 2 June 2013) are placed in Pool A.
