Punjab started the campaign of 64th Senior Men’s National Hockey Championship on winning note, while Karnataka were held yet again for draw on the 2nd day of tournament at KSHA Hockey Stadium, Bangalore.
In the first match of day, former Champion Punjab defeated the defending champion Mumbai by 3-1 to start the campaign on winning note.
The mighty Punjab made its presence felt from the word go with hard hitting and confident tackling. Even before Mumbai could settle down, Punjab took the lead through a Field Goal scored by Ranjit Singh in the 4th minute. Gurjeet Singh doubled the lead in the 24th Minute on a penalty corner. Punjab went into lemon break with 2 goals cushion.
Mumbai regrouped itself well after the breather and launched an array of attacks and forced as many as 5 penalty corner but could convert only one in 36th minute through Jayanta Meiti. Ranjit Singh scored his second in the 69th minute to complete the tally (3-1) and to ensure victory for his team.
Karnataka repeated its yesterday’s game and had to settle with 1 point after taking 2 goals lead against Uttar Pradesh.
Today, Karnataka earned in 17th minute through a penalty corner goal scored by Biju. Imran Khan restored the parity for the visitor in goal mouth melee in 23rd minute of the game. Biju scored his second goal through solo effort to earn lead once again for Karnataka just three minutes before half-time break.
The home-side Karnataka double their lead on penalty stroke resulted in from a penalty corner drill. The penalty stroke was taken by Deepak Bejiwad and he converted it easily.
The resurgent Uttar Pradesh fought back valiantly as their star player Diwakar Ram led the pack and penetrated Karnataka defence with his crisp passes. Karnataka defence line crumbled under pressure and visitors earned a series of penalty corners. Diwakar Ram himself scored twice in the 54th and 58th minutes on penalty to draw the level, which stood till the final hooter in well contested match.
