Inaugural hockey match of the 64th Senior Men’s National Hockey Championship for Rangaswamy Cup played between the hosts Karnataka and the holders Mumbai ended in 2-2 at KSHA Hockey Stadium, Bangalore.
Hosts Karnataka started on positive note and came close to scoring early in the game but missed the opportunities to misjudgements/mishits as Mumbai Goalie Sudhir Dixit stood tall under the bar. Mumbai earned 1st penalty corner of the game, on which Karnataka captain Deepak Bijwad deflected the direct flick of Jayanta Meitei to keep the 0-0 score intact.
Karnataka wasted few good close chances including a PC, before scoring through their captain Deepak in 25th on a Penalty Corner, who doubled the lead for hosts in 32nd in yet another PC earned by Vinayak Bijwad on quick start for free hit from dotted D in similar fashion by direct flick to the right of Sudhir (Mumbai Goalie).
After breather, Mumbai came out stronger and fought back to level the score through two beautifully created field goals. In 55th, Ravi Pareek deflected a free hit shot taken by Joshua from outside 23 meter. Stunned by the quick goal, Karnataka tried to reduce the pressure on their defence by sending long overheads and wasted a PC as they failed to trap cleanly.
The persistent Mumbai kept the pressure throttle on and their efforts paid off when Captain Victo Singh found the target on a long corner hit in the 67th min to equalize and split the points.
