Eight franchise based teams Bhopal Badshahs, Chandigarh Comets, Chennai Cheetahs, Delhi Wizards, Karnataka Lions, Mumbai Marines, Pune Strykers and Sher-e-Punjab participated in the 1st edition of WSH organized by Nimbus Sports in association with Indian Hockey Federation (IHF). 160 Indian players and 48 players from abroad (0.3 ratio of International players with respect to Indian players) played in the 2012 edition of the month long event.

Apart from a total of Rs. 10,00,00,000/- prize money, WSH invested a few Crores of Rupees in improving the infrastructure at host venues such as installation/upgradation of lights, laying/repairing of turf, installation of world class goalposts, etc. The WSH also worked with stadium authorities through out 8 venues (Bangalore, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Delhi, Jalandhar, Mumbai and Pune) to repair/upgrade and create facilities such as change rooms for the players, rest-rooms for spectators, etc. which are critical facilities but ignored often by the organizers and hosts.

Apart many firsts such as World Wide Live Telecast, Live Streaming on YouTube, etc and Highest Ever Prize Money in a hockey tournament, WSH-1 turned out to be fairly successful even after being tagged unofficial by FIH (International Hockey Federation). And the success story of WSH, is now a stepping stone for the hockey event in India like Hockey India League, as it was surprising for business houses and hockey fraternity including players to see such high class and successful tournament after so many hiccups and after Premier Hockey League (PHL) was discontinued due to various reasons.

WSH not only had high standards of hockey at display but also provided quality live telecast through out the world, used latest technology and equipments for conducting the matches. The tournament also found many young talented players like Devinder Walmiki, Lalit Upadhyay, Affan Yousuf, Nikkin Thimmaiah, etc. and obviously Gurjinder Singh, who went on winning the Rock Star of WSH and shared Golden Stick of WSH with Imran Warsi.

The performance of the experienced Indian and International players was a treat to watch, which earned a lot of new fans for themselves and the game. Even the former players like Dhanraj Pillay, Viren Rasquinha, Gagan Ajit Singh, etc. could not keep themselves away from the league and picked the hockey sticks once again.

The 2nd edition of World Series Hockey was supposed to start from 15 December 2012, but later it was postponed and we are yet to hear any news about it, which is very unfortunate and sad for hockey and its fans.
