The Black Sticks Men remain winless at the Sultan Azlan Shah tournament after going down 2-1 to Malaysia in front of a vocal home crowd.

Black Sticks LogoDespite a world ranking of 13th, the Malaysians now have two wins from two games after defeating Korea in their opening match.

The Black Sticks were straight onto defence as the game got underway with Malaysia creating several scoring chances but lacking the execution to deliver.

As the first half wore on New Zealand seemed to find a rhythm but was repelled by the opposition defence and the match went into halftime locked up nil-all.

Malaysia broke the deadlock in the 40th minute when Chua Boon Huat flicked the ball into the top of the net after receiving a great pass into the circle.

Just four minutes later a deflection by Tengku Ahmad Tajuddin bounced off Andy Hayward and past Devon Manchester in goal to put the Kiwis two goals behind.

Arun Panchia looked to have scored in the 53rd minute but was called back by umpire John Wright of South Africa for a foul on his defender.

The Black Sticks finally had some luck in the 65th minute with Shay Neal pulling off a stunning full body dive to deflect in Hayward’s pass from the side’s second penalty corner of the game.

New Zealand lifted in intensity over the final 10 minutes in search of an equalising goal, but Malaysia’s defence rallied and remained strong.

The Black Sticks will use Monday’s rest day to reassess their tactics before heading into a must-win against Korea at 9pm (NZ time) on Tuesday. The game is live on SKY Sport 3.
