After sluggish start of the campaign, the 5 times world champions Germany defeated Pakistan 3-0 in their last league to set-up summit clash against the favorites India at the 2nd edition Sultan of Johor Cup, world’s first Under-21 invitational hockey tournament and a brain child of the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim ibni Almahrum Sultan Iskandar.
India is the only undefeated team in this edition of the tournament, having won against Australia (2-0), Germany (3-1) and New Zealand (3-1). While India were held for goal less draw by Pakistan and 3-3 draw by the hosts and champions of first edition Malaysia. India finished at the top of the table with 11 points after completion of league stage.
Both Germany and Australia won 3 of their 5 matches, but Germany had better goal difference (6) in comparison to Australia’s 5 and finished at 2nd place in table after league.
On rainy final day of league matches, India were held for 3-3 draw by the hosts Malaysia, while Germany defeated Pakistan 3-0 and Australia defeated their trans-Tasmanian arch-rival New Zealand 5-1, but the solitary goal conceded proved fatal for the finalists of last edition and missed the place in finals of this edition.
Australia will face Pakistan for 3rd place, while the hosts Malaysia will lock horns with Black Sticks to avoid wooden finish.
