Punjab to take on Haryana in semifinals, Odisha to face SAI Bhopal

LUCKNOW, September 7: Punjab set up a high-voltage semifinal clash with defending champions Haryana in the 2ndJunior National Men Hockey Championship at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium in the Guru Gobind Singh College here tomorrow. Last year’s finalist Odisha will battle it out with SAI Bhopal in the other semifinal.

In the quarterfinals today, Punjab beat MP Hockey Academy (Bhopal) 7-1 and Haryana defeated Himachal Pradesh 4-1. Odisha had to put their best foot forward to secure a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Karnataka. Haryana, Punjab, SAI Bhopal and Karnataka enter quarterfinals

LUCKNOW, September 6: Four goals by young Mandeep Singh helped star-studded Punjab enter the quarterfinals of the 2nd Junior National Men Hockey Championship, with a huge 15-0 win against Gujarat in Pool C at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium in the Guru Gobind Singh College here today. Skipper Satvir Singh and Talwinder Singh scored two goals each.

Punjab will meet spirited MP Hockey Academy (Bhopal) in a quarterfinal match tomorrow. Defending champions Haryana also booked their berth in the round of eight, defeating Bengal 4-1 in pool A. Gagandeep Singh, Gurjant Singh and Nikhil were the goal scorers for Haryana, while Rohit Thakur scored for Bengal. Haryana will now take on Himachal Pradesh for a place in the semifinals. Nimbus and IHF announce dates for WSH Season 2: From 15 December 2012 to 20 January, 2013

Mumbai, 6 September: After the resounding success of the first season of World Series Hockey, Nimbus and IHF have announced the dates for the second season. The world’s biggest hockey league will be played from Saturday, 15 December 2012 to Sunday, 20 January 2013.

The inaugural season of World Series Hockey was a resounding success with the championship being watched in over 30 countries on television and over 65 countries on YouTube. The unique television tune-ins in India was over 32 million; triple that of the English Premier League in the same period.

Akashdeep (Jr India Captain) scored 4 Goals in Punjab’s (7-0) win over Chhattisgarh

LUCKNOW, September 5: Akashdeep Singh scored four goals, including a hat-trick, to help Punjab begin their campaign in the 2nd Hockey India Junior National Men Hockey Championship in style with a 7-0 victory over Chhattisgarh 7-0 a pool C match at the Maj. Dhyan Chand Stadium in the Guru Gobind Singh College here today. Aksdeep Singh scored his first goal in the first half and again in the 54th, 57th and 64th minutes to complete his maiden hat-trick in the championship.

Chandigarh, who lost to Karnataka in their opening match by 0-2 yesterday, staged a comeback in the event, scoring an easy 10-1 win against Jammu and Kahsmir in pool G. But, with two wins in as many as matches, Karnataka are on the verge of making it to the last eight. Continue reading →

Kerala split points with J&K in a thriller, Bengal got a walkover from Assam

Lucknow, September 4: Kerala played a spirited game today to split points with Jammu & Kashmir after playing a 4-4 draw in a pool G league match of the 2nd Junior National Men Hockey Championship, at the Major Dhyan Chand Stadium in Lucknow.

In other matches of the day, Chhattisgarh defeated Gujarat 8-0 in a pool C match, Maharashtra beat Uttarakhand by 5-0 in a pool E match, Bengal got a walkover from Assam, which failed to turn up, SAI Bhopal beat Tamil Nadu 5-0 in pool E, whereas Karnataka beat Chandigarh 2-0 in pool G. FIH-HI High Performance Coaching Course begins in Lucknow

LUCKNOW, September 4: Olympians and former international hockey players like Mohamad Riaz, Carriapa BJ, Baljeet Singh Saini, Surinder Kaur and Sandeep Kaur are participating in the first-ever High Performance Coaching Programme for Indian coaches being conducted by Federation of International Hockey (FIH) and Hockey India, starting here today.

FIH LogoThe three-year programme aims to help Indian coaches obtain up to a Level 3 certification and will be an annual feature during the Hockey India Junior National championship.
