Sunday 9th September: Ireland’s men wrapped up their first foray into the World League today in their closing match with a convincing 8-0 win over Sweden. Ireland who remained unbeaten this weekend with solid win’s over hosts Wales and Austria will now progress to World League 2 taking place early in 2013 (details TBC).
Although the Swedes had the first real chance in the form of an early penalty corner the Irish defence read it well and defended cleanly. Just three minutes later Ireland capitalised from a defensive error and Timmy Cockram raced forward to score Ireland’s opener. Six minutes later Ireland secured another from a penalty corner which marksman John Jermyn converted adding to his already impressive tally. Two minutes on and Ireland made it 3-0 when Jermyn stepped up to convert a penalty stroke giving the boys in green a healthy lead at half time.
Ireland came out guns blazing after the break and immediately forced the Swedish keeper into action keeping the attack at bay. But Ireland’s consistent pressure paid dividends when Conor Harte duly converted Ireland’s corner routine making it 4-0. Next up it was Michael Watt’s turn to get on the scoresheet when he scored two goals from open play before Andy McConnell put the final nail in the coffin with two of his own to make the final tally eight goals to nil.
Ireland will travel home later today in the knowledge that they have secured their spot in world league 2.
