After the completion of Pool matches, Defending Champions Netherlands and Hosts Great Britain placed at 1st and 2nd place in Pool A, while the current World Champions Argentina and New Zealand qualified for the semi-finals from Pool B.
It will be the first Olympics semi final for world number six New Zealand, the Black Sticks. In the earlier editions of the games, the Black Sticks have finished on 6th place for 3 times. The Netherlands will play New Zealand in 1st semi final while Argentina will lock horn with the hosts Great Britain in 2nd semi-final for the place in Gold medal match to be played on 10th August at Riverbank Arena.
In the 1st match of the day, New Zealand held world number 3 Germany for scoreless draw to reach the semi-finals of the Olympics for the first time. The world number 6 Black Sticks needed a draw to make to be top 4 women’s hockey teams of London 2012 and they did it. Both the teams had plenty of chances to score, but the match ended scoreless, eliminating world number 3 Germany, who finished at 4th place in Pool B.
In the second match of the day, South African women’s overwhelmed USA with a 7-0 victory in Pool B and made sure that they will play for 9th position after entering in the tournament as 12th ranked, while USA will play to avoid wooden spoon.
Upset win (1-0) of 9th ranked Japan over Silver Medalists from Beijing, China in the third match of the day, made sure that China missed the cut to semi-finals while hosts Great Britain qualified for semi-finals. The lone goal of the match came through Rika KOMAZAWA in 16th minute of the other hard fought match. While the fourth match of the day was played between Korea and Belgium, which Korea won 3-1 to finish fourth in Pool A and will play for 7th position.
The first match of evening session was played between defending champions Netherlands and hosts Great Britain, which the Dutch women won 2-1. The match would have been crucial for the hosts if Germany had won against New Zealand in the Pool A match in the morning session. Since both Great Britain and the Dutch had already qualified for the semi-finals, the match was only to decide the Pool A winner. With 5th win from as many outings the Dutch won the Pool A and will play the 2nd placed team (New Zealand) in Pool B.
In the last match of the pool stage, Argentina needed a draw and they held their nerves, played cleverly to achieve the minimum required result to make their 4th consecutive appearance in the Olympics semi finals. In the tense and hard fought match, world number seven Hockeyroos tried hard to find that eluded goal to win the game, tried to create extra pressure on world number two Las Leonas in last five minute by adding an extra field after pulling out their goalie Tony CRONK from under the bars but could find the target and had to contend with a draw to finish 3rd in Pool B.
