The Men’s Hockey Competition at Riverbank Arena will kick start on the 30th of July, Monday. The Black Sticks will feature in the Men’s Hockey opening game of London Olympics like their Women’s counterparts who were part of Opening Game of the Women’s Hockey Competition. The 1976 Olympic Gold Medalists – New Zealand will play Korea – the Silver Medalists of 2000 Olympics in the first match of Pool B at 8:30 BST. World #7 Black Sticks (New Zealand) have faced Korea twice in the Olympics and have won on both the occasions.
2nd Match of the day (1st of Pool A) will be played between current World Champions and #1 team in the FIH World Ranking – Australia and the lowest ranked team in the current competition – South Africa in morning session at Riverbank Arena. Kookaburras (Australia) have played South Africa 3 times in Olympics and won twice and drawn once. The last Olympic match between Australia and South Africa was played in Beijing Olympics in 2008, where the Kookaburras outclassed the Springbocks (RSA) with a 10-0 victory.
In the afternoon session, Asian neighboring arch-rival Pakistan and India are pitched against European Giants Spain and Netherlands respectively. Asian Games 2010 Gold Medalists Pakistan will take on Bronze Medalists of Beijing Olympics Spain in the 2nd match of Pool A at 13:45 BST, while the Olympic history’s most successful hockey team – India will lock horns with the World Number 3 Netherlands at 16:00 BST in Pool B. India have played Netherlands 10 times in Olympics, and have won on 7 occasions, drawn once and lost twice. The Orange (Netherlands) had won 3-1 when they faced India last time in the Olympics in Athens and went on to finish as Silver Medalists.
Hosts Great Britain will face 2011 Pan American Games Champions Argentina in Pool A at 19:00 BST, while last match of the day will be played between the Gold Medalists of Beijing Olympics, Silver Medalists of World Cup 2010, World’s Number 2 Team – Germany and Champions of FIH Champions Challenge 2011 – Belgium at 21:15 BST.
