The Jude Felix Hockey Academy (JFHA), Charitable Trust is traveling on a perfect path to achieve what they set themselves to do as inscribed in their mission.. “Develop hockey at the grass-root levels starting at schools, orphanages and homes, through the game enable children with important life-skills needed to successfully deal with challenges in life” Since its inception in 2009 the academy has trained around 200 children. The commitment of the coaches and volunteers is seen in the smiles of the little children as they assemble to practice Hockey every morning without fail.
Most of the children being currently trained live at St Mary’s orphanage and go to Maria Niketan School and are being taught Hockey by coaches of international repute. Through Hockey life skills and discipline which would help them grow as individuals are being imparted. We were told by coach P. Shanmugham that there has been a significant positive change in the children, they respect and care for each other a lot more than they used to. The children are given assignments on and off the field and taught values such as leadership, team-spirit, sharing, caring and are constantly encouraged for what they do.
Constant efforts and determination from Coach Jude Felix, and his team who are moulding the children are unparalleled, their near goals are to take the academy to the next level by laying turf on the ground and building an indoor practice facility so that practice can continue even during rains. They are also looking to involve more volunteers who can help them help the kids.
Jude Felix Hockey Academy is not just another Academy – it is a “Model School” which teaches children Hockey and a lot more. Such a model is being tried for the first time in India through the National game, and our visit to the academy assured us that there are very good chances of seeing the children shine bright in life, we wish the academy and the little children the best.
