Hockey India Selectors Col. Balbir Singh, B.P. Govinda and Syed Ali alongwith the Government Observers Harbinder Singh and Dilip Tirkey besides Chief Coach Michael Nobbs held a Selection Meeting to decide on the Core Group of Probables for future camps. They unanimously selected the 48 probables who would be in consideration for the team that would play in the Olympic Games.

The big names like former captains and seasoned players, Arjun Halappa and Rajpal Singh, are missing from the list of probables. Earlier Rajpal Singh was not selected for on the basis of fitness while Arjun Halappa considered good enough for standbys for Olympic Qualifiers Squad. The omission of both the players from scheme of things has came as big shock for hockey fraternity in the country. But this is usual in Indian hockey, players have been left out without any major/minor issue with their onfield performance including Prabhjot Singh, Arjun Halappa, Adrian D’souza, Rajpal Singh and Deepak Thakur to name a few in recent past.

The list of probables is as following: Continue reading →

Indian National Team Players Reaffirm Participation in Bridgestone WSH

We are pleased to confirm that all players contracted to play in the inaugural edition of Bridgestone World Series Hockey (WSH), including players from India’s successful Olympic Qualifier team, have reaffirmed their participation in Bridgestone WSH 2012. These confirmations come despite the latest antics by IHF’s rival body in announcing a fictitious camp for Olympic probables. The IHF and WSH have been informed by the relevant authorities of sport in India that no such camp has been planned or even requested for. We have been further informed that there are no plans to conduct ANY National camp before the 4th of April 2012

Indian Hockey and the path-breaking event, WSH are beyond these petty politics and publicity stunts. In fact, World Series Hockey launched an incentive program called “Strive For Gold” to motivate the Indian hockey team to excel at the 2012 London Olympics. We are delighted that the team is in the right direction and re-confirm that every WSH player who was part of the victorious squad will be paid Rs 5 lakh each for achieving the first milestone.

India and the world of hockey have waited long enough; Bridgestone World Series Hockey will launch on the 29th of February 2012 . The Opening match in Chandigarh will see the Bhopal Badshahs taking on the Chandigarh Commets and will be preceded by a spectacular opening ceremony featuring Bollywood stars Saif Ali Khan, Mika, Neha Dhupia and many other star performers.

The India’s men team, coached by former Australian international hockey player Michael Jack Nobbs, was ruthless in their approach throughout the tournament, but had some tough times against Poland and Canada in the league stage of the tourney. On the other hand, final match against France was a different story. Indians were on attack from the word go, but French player defended it well until the deadlock was broken by youngster Birendra Lakra (17th minute) with a close range reverse hit. And 2 minutes later Sandeep Singh converted India’s 2nd penalty corner, which was earned by video-umpire referral claiming French defender pulled Shivendra Singh when he was trying to latch the free ball in front the goalie. Though France pulled one back through MARTIN-BRISAC Simon in a swift counter attack in 24th minute and reduced the margin to 2-1. Within two minutes the lead was restored by Sandeep Singh, when converted another penalty corner. India went in lemon break with the two goals lead (3-1). Continue reading →
