Forward Rajpal Singh will lead a relatively younger Indian Hockey team in next month’s inaugural Asian Champions Trophy (Men’s) in Ordos, China. Striker Saba Anjum will lead a 18-member Indian women’s hockey squad in the second Asian Champions Trophy (Women’s) to be held at Ordos from September 3-11, parallel to men’s.
India (men’s) will be missing the services of senior players like Arjun Halappa, Shivendra Singh, Dharamvir, Tushar Khandekar and Bharat Chhikara. While Shivendra is recuperating from a collar bone fracture, Halappa and Khandkar are suffering from groin and ankle injuries respectively, on the other hand Bharat Chhikara is back on the field after staying out of field for more than 6 months since Asiads (November 2010), but he could make it to team.
India chief coach Michael Nobbs said, “I think I am happy with the team. All the selectors and coaches were unanimous on team selection. While selecting the team we kept in mind not just this tournament but also Australian tour and Champions Trophy in December.”
