Delhi based Jawarhalal Nehru Hockey Tournament Society to present needy Mrs Shanti Mary, wife of late VJ Peter, Rs. 2 lac on National Sports Day. He was an extra-ordinary hockey player. He won a a silver, gold and bronze for India in three Olympics 1960, 1964 and 1968 respectively. Services player in domestic hockey, Peter, was awarded an Arjuna in 1967. The Nehru Hockey Tournament society will organize an exhibition match on August 29 (Sports Day) in his memory.

To join the efforts of Nehru Hockey Tournament Society, Dronacharya Awardee Hockey Coach A K Bansal appeals: “Dear all every day we r talking about the standard of hockey-going down or up, but in this race we r forgeting our real time heroes like late V.J.Peter, tripal Olympion and winner of atleast a medal in all three (one gold,one silver, & one bronze), now its a sad story that the late peter’s family is strugling to meet both ends offcourse JL Nehru Hockey Society took a great step and decided to hand over a cheque of Rs. 2.0 Lacs for his family on 29th Aug’11. but friends question is why Nehru society alone- can’t we all help to that great family ? every day we spent hundreds of rupees for useless talk over mobile phone, burning liters of petrol in our car/ two wheeler. frds we also want to help the needy family, could u pls join us ?“
Well known hockey journalist and editor stick2hockey.com K Arumugam’s facebook status reads, “Old timers say, once you see him play, you will never forget him in your lifetime. But the poor VJ Peter, triple Olympic hockey medallist, did not leave much for his family when died 13 years ago. I brought his wife’s poor living condition to the knowledge of my friend Kukoo Walia in Nehru Hockey Tournament Society. Now they are going to give the 71-year old Rs. 2 lac. Am really happy.” and he acknowledged all the comments with the words, “Dear friends, thank you all. I saw all these posts late as I was busy in the week end with OTHL boys. I wish to state that my role is minimal, just a go between the family and mr. Kukoo Walia. It is he who took interest, and made genuine efforts to move forward. I salute him for this gesture.“
