65th Obaidullah Khan Gold Cup: Prize Money Increased, Inaugurated with Laser Show

65th Obaidullah Khan Gold Cup, the prestigious domestic hockey tournament of India, was inaugurated by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan by offering prayer to Hockey.  He also announced that the prize money for the winners has been increased to more than double from Rs 5 lakh to Rs 11 lakh. Similarly, the prize money increased to 5.5 lakh from 3 lakh and 2.75 lakh from 2 lakh for runners up and third positioned team respectively. Ministers Tukajirao Pawar,Babulal Gour, Umashankar Gupta, Mayor Krishna Gour, Hockey India President Mariama Koshi, the MP of Gwalior Yashodra Raje Scindia, MLA Vishwas Sarang, Dhruvnarayan Singh, Sanjay Chaudhary and MP State Hockey Academy Chief Coach Ashok Kumar were also present there at inauguration, which showcased the history of hockey nursery Bhopal through an amazing laser show.

The first match of the tournament was played between Namdhari XI and Sapura Club (Malaysia) and ended in a goalless draw. None of the team could not score from numerous chances. Gurmail Singh of Namdhari was adjudged player of the match.

65th All-India Obaidullah Khan Gold Cup Hockey Tournament

The 65th All-India Obaidullah Khan Gold Cup Hockey Tournament will be held in bhopal from May 23-31, 2011. A total of 12 teams, including Sapura Club, Malaysia and Bangladesh XI, would take part in the tournament. The teams are divided in four pools, which are as following:
obaidullah khanPool A: Air India, Sports Authority of India (SAI) and Punjab National Bank (PNB),
Pool B: Sapura Club (Malaysia), Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and Namdhari Club,
Pool C: Bangladesh XI, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) and Madhya Pradesh State Hockey Academy,

Azlan Shah Cup 2011

Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, the most prestigious hockey tournament outside FIH calendar, which has been regularly hosted since its inception in 1983 and have been played 20 times including 2011 edition. Previous winners details can be found here on the official website of tournament.

This year world champions Australia won the cup for record 6th time, while Asian Games 2010 Gold Medalists Pakistan were the runners-up, followed by Great Britain and New Zealand at third and fourth positions. But the joint defending champions South Korea and India could finish only at fifth and sixth position respectively in 7 team tournament.

Our website has turned one year old with Azlan Shah Cup 2011 and we are happy to say that we have been partially able to achieve our targets of having a live hub of hockey-news and have been getting a good response from our visitor. Australia are on second position in the table with 2 win and 1 draw. Arch rival Pakistan is following India closely with 2 wins from 4 matches. Next match between traditional arch-rivals India and Pakistan will be crucial for their run in the tournament.

India scored a convincing victory against world number 4 Great Britain by 3-1, Rupinder Pal Singh scored a Hat-trick for India, while they lost their campaign opening match against athletic South Korea 2-3 after having a lead of 2-0. The neighbors Pakistan have won their both the matches are on the top of the table. Australia are at third position after India by winning their first match against hosts Malaysia, are followed by Great Britain and South Korea who have registered one win from their two matches. While black sticks New Zealand and the hosts Malaysia have to register a win to earn points and move up in the table from bottom two positions.
