FIH returns to India in Dec-2011 with Champions Trophy

The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has allotted 33rd edition its most prestigious annual tournament Champions Trophy(CT) to India, which will be played in December 2011. And the Women’s Champions Trophy 2011 will be played in Netherlands. The 2010 edition of Champions Trophy will be played in Monchengladbach (Germany)

The FIH is also looking for wild card entries in CT from 2011 or 2012, which was discussed in the recent meeting of FIH’s competition committee. Continue reading →

Las Leonas win third successive Champions Trophy title: FIH

Argentina have won the Samsung FIH Champions Trophy, claiming their third successive title courtesy of a 4-2 victory over The Netherlands in Nottingham, England.

Noel BARRIONUEVO scored a hat-trick of penalty corners, with Carla REBECCHI also getting her name on the score-sheet. The Netherlands scored field goals from Kelly JONKER and Maartje GODERIE, but it was not enough to deny Argentina the win. It was a fantastic afternoon for Las Leonas who will be hoping to take their sensational form into the World Cup, which begins next month in the Argentinean city of Rosario.

Indian Squad for Asian Champions Trophy

The team India will be playing in the inaugural edition of Asian Champions Trophy at Busan, South Korea from July 27-31. The top four teams from the Bangkok Asia Cup (Nov, 2009) will compete in the tournament which organised by Asian Hockey Federation. India had secured their place in World Cup 2010 and Asian Champions Trophy by winning silver medal in 2009 Asia Cup.

The squad to be coached MK Kaushik was announced in Bhopal. But, there is no news of experienced Mamta Kharab after an injury. She has not been part of Indian Squad since New Zealand tour of team India in May. Continue reading →

Hockey players fear for their careers

The upcoming talent pool of Indian Hockey is worried about their future, since Hockey India(HI) has issued a warning against participation in Indian Hockey Federation(IHF) backed 63rd Senior National Men’s Hockey Championship, which is underway in Bhopal. According to tournament director Peter Menenzes it will be a major negative impact on Indian Hockey if HI ban all the participating players. National umpire TP Singh sees future of Indian Hockey in these players and said “They should not be overlooked.”
