The International Hockey Federation (FIH) is now planning to introduce wild card entries in the Champions Trophy (CT) which is played every year between top six teams according to world ranking. Number of competing teams for the prestigious CT will increase to eight with wild card entries. It was proposed to introduce two wild card entries in CT from 2011 or 2012 in a recent FIH’s competition committee meeting.
Pakistan Hockey Federation secretary Asif Bajwa, who attended competition committee’s meeting, said, “The matter was discussed at the competition’s committee meeting and the committee has now recommended that teams in the Champions Trophy be increased to eight with two wild card entries.”
He also told, “The proposal is to have 24 teams from Asia/Oceania, Europe, Panamerica/Africa continents with the tournament continuing between major events like the World Cup or Champions Trophy.”
He said the idea was the increase the popularity of hockey and FIH would discuss these recommendations of the competition committee in next Executive Board meeting.
India and Pakistan have failed to qualify for the Champions Trophy in recent years due to poor rankings.
